FOIA Effort Falls Short of Total but Qualified in 50 counties; APA Vows A Second Effort in ‘26

Little Rock — Representatives of FOIA BQCs and Arkansas Press Association officials announced today that their effort to place a constitutional amendment and initiated act on the November 5 ballot had fallen just short of the required number of signatures while collecting the necessary number from the 50 counties, indicating broad support and a strong organization.

Bickering in Bull Shoals

By Robert Lyons The City of Bull Shoals met amid turmoil from residents and city officials at a workshop Tuesday, June 18 and city council meeting on Thursday, June 27. For the workshop, council members Joey Grede, Dale Forbus, Wes Phelan, Dino Giannini, Daryl Lindman, Michael Castagna were in attendance, along with Carol Duss, mayor and Tina Bailey, recorder and treasurer. All attending the council meeting except Joey Grede. The city officials attempted to dive into the business at hand to help the city by paying bills, purchasing equipment needed for the city’s operation and applying appropriations for funds. During both meetings, the council and other officials listened to citizens’ comments and sometimes comments were intense.

BNR seeks public comments for a plan to improve accessibility

Harrison – Buffalo National River is seeking comments on a draft plan that provides for more inclusive experiences for visitors with disabilities. The draft plan, a self-evaluation and transition plan (SETP), identifies areas in the park where the accessibility of public structures, campsites, river access points, signs, and services can be improved. The SETP outlines specific areas where accessibility barriers exist and identifies critical steps towards meaningful solutions. These opportunities for improvements will be a roadmap for future upgrades in the park as funding and compliance with federal laws, such as the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), allow.

An Amazing Find

I am sure you all have heard of finding a sealed bottle on the shoreline with a message in it. Well, this is a new memory that has just happened to me. It was feeding time for my dog, and I opened a can of dog food and to my surprise; I dug out a toy bird calling whistle.

PTSD is Treatable

Post-traumatic stress disorder, known as PTSD, is a mental health disorder that may develop following a traumatic event in which a person is exposed to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence. PTSD can be treated, and symptoms can be reduced. The military’s use of its updated 2023 PTSD treatment guidelines will further improve the outlook of PTSD patients.

The Big Piney Pool Hall Rules…

I hope to have my Big Piney Museum and Ozark Interpretive Center finished and open by this fall. One of the contents is a pool table that was made in the early 1920s, dubbed an A.E. Schmidt Victory Table. It was sent to the main street pool hall in Houston, Missouri, about 1922. My dad and grandfather bought the pool hall in 1957 when I was 10. From then until 1964, I worked there after school and at various times during the summer.
