On July 5, 1947, Larry Doby made his debut with the Cleveland Indians, becoming the first Black player in the American League three months after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in the National League. (In the game against the Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park, Doby, pinch-hitting for Bryan Stephens, struck out in his first at-bat during the seventh inning; Chicago won 6-5.)

Charlie Melton, Coach Yellville Pee-Wee Football and Cheer forms can be picked up starting July 6 at the Yellville City Hall. The deadline for signups is July 24. Anyone interested in helping coach either third-fourth grand team or fifth-sixth grade team will need to fill out the coach’s application and return it to City Hall. Arvest Million Meals Campaign Helps Raise More than $71,000

YELLVILLE — Arvest is pleased to announce the bank’s 13th annual Million Meal’s campaign helped raise more than $71,000 to benefit six local food partners in Marion, Boone and Baxter counties. With the understanding that $1 can provide the equivalent of up to five meals through local food pantries, the annual Million Meals initiative raises money through special events and donations collected across the bank’s four-state footprint with the goal of providing at least one million meals to feed those in need.
