Joe Soluri, Navy Veteran

Joe entered the United States Navy at the age of 17. Joe served fourteen months of sea duty. During which time he was on the aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard CVA 31 which was involved with the protection of the Islands of Quemoy and Matsu in the Taiwan Straits in 1957-58. His duty was to fuel the aircraft. Those were hairy times, yet Mainland China was not yet strong enough to challenge us.

The Pool Hall Kid

I went to work at the pool hall one afternoon, straight from school. Ol’ Jim and Ol’ Bill were there, and they could tell I was despondent. I was 13 years old and had just got my first pair of glasses. I wanted a girlfriend awfully bad at that time and those glasses made me uglier than I had ever been. One of the older girls called me ‘four eyes. Now ‘the pool hall kid’ wasn’t my only nickname. Now I was gonna be called the “four-eyed pool hall kid”. I told my old friends there on the front bench that I was thinking on quitting school and just staying there in the pool hall forever. Ol’ Bill asked what brought that on and I told him. I was born too ugly to ever get a girlfriend and now I was uglier because of those glasses.

Auxiliary gives $100,000 to NARMC

The NARMC Auxiliary held their annual Christmas party “Jingle and Mingle” on Tuesday, December 20. A Holiday meal provided by NARMC Food and Nutrition Services Dept. was served and each volunteer received a jingle bell bracelet along with miniature Santa pants goody bags filled with candy.

Butterfly Gardening in Arkansas

Butterflies are a welcome visitor to any Arkansas garden. To attract butterflies, gardeners are planting all types of blooming plants, in the hopes that butterflies will flock to their garden. While many flowering plants will entice butterflies to your garden, to increase diversity, consider adding plants that serve as food for the caterpillars. A butterfly garden can be as small as a few containers of plants, or as large as the yard you have.
