Cattleticks

Scientists conducting research on tick-transmitted cattle diseases in Arkansas have turned up new samples of the invasive Asian longhorned tick. The Asian longhorned tick, also known as a bush tick, was found in May by Elizabeth Smith, extension entomology program tech for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, who was collecting ticks from cattle at the Savoy Research Complex.

What are the benefits of trees? Have you ever thought that trees can help lower high temperatures? Do you prefer to stand in the shade or the sun on these 100 degree days we have been having? What about your livestock? If shade trees are provided, that has forage underneath, will they graze more and be more productive? If trees are close to our house and provides some shade for it, will that help to have a cooler house, therefore making our high energy bill less? As with any beneficial practice there comes some disadvantages also.

First time I ever saw it was something about, or around, 65 years ago. It was just a huge hole in the side of the bluff overlooking the lower Big Piney River, a fantastic looking cave about 50 or 60 feet above the base of the bluff, and likely 15 or 20 feet down from the peak of it. Inaccessible!

PETS OF THE WEEK

We would like to introduce you to this handsome gentleman. Gunner is a two-year-old Lab mix and he currently is a svelte 74-pounds. Sadly, he and his brother were found as strays a few weeks ago by Yellville Animal Control. We thought for sure someone would come looking for them, but our hopes went unfulfilled and now Gunner is ready to check out of this “hotel” and move on with his furever family. And those humans will be so lucky.

MCQC Approves Ord. for MC

On Tuesday, July 12 the Marion County Quorum Court (MCQC) met to discuss ordinances concerning purchasing equipment, establishing a fund and communications for MC. Justices Brady Madden, James Underwood, Claudia Brigham, Joyce McCalla, Rick White, Talon Vancuren, Marty Nickels and Mike Scrima were in attendance for the meeting along with John Massey, MC Judge, and John Russo, MC Attorney.
